The history of N.F.Railway Pensioners’ Association dates back to early days following the introduction of pension system in Indian Railways in 1957. With the increase in the number of retired employees, the need for organized efforts for settlement of pensioners’ grievances and for welfare activities also began to be felt. So, pensioners’ welfare organisations emerged sporadically at Badarpur, Lumding, Pandu, Bongaigaon and Siliguri. These local bodies worked to address pension-related problems and to foster unity among retired railway employees.
In time, some dedicated leaders of these organisations felt the need for a united and centralised organisation for all pensioners on N.F. Railway. Pioneers of this unification movement were Late Arun Chakraborty of Siliguri, Late S. Sanyal of Bongaigaon, Late Abani Mohan Roy of Pandu, Late Jyotish Chakraborty of Lumding and Late Manoranjan Karmakar of Badarpur. It is due to the tireless efforts of these pioneers that pensioners from different regions of N.F. Railway united under one common platform.
With this end in view, in the year 1982, a joint meeting of the pensioners’ organisations of that time was held at Bongaigaon. The genesis of Northeast Frontier Railway Pensioners’ Association can be traced to this historic meeting.
Since then, the Association has expanded considerably throughout all divisions and sub-divisions of N.F. Railway, with its Central Office at Pandu, Guwahati. At present, there are 34 branches of the Association spread over North-Eastern states, Parts of North Bengal and Bihar , and also Kolkata, with an approximate membership of 18,000 pensioners and family pensioners. The Association continues to work for the welfare, dignity, and legitimate rights of railway pensioners and family pensioners.
